Back in the 1950’s Alderman Mathias “Paddy” Bauler called it right. It is 2010 and it is Yogi Berra’s “de ja vu all over again”. The winners in Tuesday’s election were not the people. The winners were the Chicago Democratic Machine, especially the troika of Alderman Ed Burke, House Speaker Mike Madigan, and their puppet, Joe Berrios.
Madigan and Burke waited a long time for Daley to leave- they could not topple him. Now, they can take over. With their guy Berrios as party chair and Assessor, they will rule Chicago. Pulling the strings behind the scenes. Raking in millions through their various conflicts of interest.
The most important election was not the governor or US Senator. The most important election was Joe Berrios. Through Berrios, Madigan and Burke can pull the puppet strings safely, behind the scenes.
The second most important election was Preckwinkle. She is a Berrios supporter and cheerleader. She is now the President of the Cook County Board. The more things change, the more they remain the same. The only difference between her and Stroger? She is taller. She will be the patronage chief- doling out jobs and contracts to the faithful, while spouting reform platitudes.
Some years back, a pundit quipped that the stupidity of the voters should never be underestimated. On Tuesday, the voters proved just how stupid they really are. They elected to keep the criminally corrupt Chicago Machine in power. They elected Joe Berrios. They also paved the way for the machine to put in their guy for mayor and several aldermen.
The voters elected to keep waste, fraud, corruption, malfeasance, crime, patronage, and mismanagement alive and well. The voters chose crime and corruption over good government, honor, and dignity.
Mike Madigan and Ed Burke are the new bosses of Chicago. Their puppets, Berrios and Preckwinkle, are set to take the fall. All the pieces are in place. Like the old Kelly- Nash Machine which ruled Chicago from 1933-1947, the Madigan- Burke Machine will bring more shame and discredit to the most corrupt city in America.
Aren’t you proud?
