654 million dollars. Chicago mayor Malaprop is pondering what do do about that figure. 654 million dollars is the record breaking city budget hole. He knows what he does not want to do; force unions to make more concessions, tap special property tax revenue, lease Midway Airport to some corrupt pals of his, or raise fees and taxes. I should rephrase that. Mayor Malaprop does no know what to do.
Like most Democrats, he has ideas. Democrats are great idea people. He just does not have any specifics. Democrats are terrible specifics people. Mayor Malaprop has a big problem. More trees, blue recycling cans, wrought iron fences, hired trucks, festivals, and less guns will not solve this one.
He cannot decry this as silly, just silly. He cannot threaten to stick this up someone’s butt. He cannot rip up an airport in the middle of the night. He also can’t turn those fifty stumble bums in the city council into financially responsible adults.
The Chicago Tribune has estimated that waste, fraud, mismanagement, and corruption cost Chicago five hundred million dollars a year. If Mayor Malaprop just eliminated those, he would only be facing a 124 million dollar budget shortfall. That will not happen anytime soon. He and the stumble bums in the council just cannot bring themselves to that point, even if there was an intervention.
What is a mayor to do? We do know one thing. Just as sure as the sun will rise, Mayor Malaprop will say something stupid before the crisis is over.
