Pat Quinn is proof that Democrats are shameless. They will do anything to capture hearts, minds, and votes- no matter how useless the activity. Democrats love useless commissions who investigate problems, then issue useless reports. After some headlines, the reports are filed to gather dust and cobwebs.
Quinn has decided he- not the people, but he- needs a commission on violence. It will include victims, community organizers, and “authorities and experts” in violence prevention. They will issue their report- are you ready for this- in November, just in time for the election.
Quinn could save a lot of time and money. But that is not the progressive, independent, reformer way. First, there is no such thing as an expert or authority in violence prevention. These so called experts usually come up with the same nonsense- more funding for useless groups like Cease Fire, midnight basketball, gun turn ins, and other useless advice. There are probably several reports on file somewhere already from prior commissions on crime and violence. Just dust them off and read them. Then, put them away again after garnering some headlines. Save the state some money.
This is nothing more than shameless, desperate, pandering in an effort to pick up votes. Quinn has as much concern about violence as he does about the state budget. Quinn does not care about violence, nor does he care about the victims or their families. He does not even care about people. Quinn cares about publicity. He is a life long failure as a politician, but he is a master of publicity. Instead of running for public office, he should open a PR firm.
There is a way to curb violence and crime. No one in government- on any level is willing to do what it takes. There must be tough, stringent, structural and institutional changes in the whole criminal justice system. There are too many changes to enumerate here. The current antiquated system is designed to benefit the criminal and protect elected officials- at all levels- from policing, to prosecution, to courts, and to the penal system. Somehow the protection of society has been conveniently left out.
Unless there is a major shift in philosophy, all the commissions on crime and violence will be useless. Just like all the ones that came before them. All they do is sound good and make it look like politicians really care. To guys like Quinn, sounding good is all that matters.
