Embattled gaffe prone RNC Chairman Michael Steele has lived to fight another day.  After his latest gaffe over Afghanistan and calls from top Republicans for his resignation, Steele is still standing.  The fire is quenched and the rebellion quelled.

There is a certain level of unfairness in play here.  Joe Biden, the Vice President, is more than gaffe prone.  He is a blithering idiot.  He does not care who he offends- even heads of state.  No one calls for his resignation.  There is no harsh criticism of of him in the media.  No howls of protest from Democratic leaders.  No demands he resign or be stuffed into a closet somewhere- out of sight, out of mind.  He always gets a free pass.  The talking point and media template is “that’s just Joe”.  He is treated kindly, like the doddering embarrassing uncle who lives in your basement.

If one compares the gaffes of Michael Steele and Joe Biden- and their severity and impact on governance- Joe Biden should have disappeared long ago.  The man is a verbal weapon of mass destruction.  The media adores old Joe.  They detest Michael Steele.  Worse, the Democrats love him.  Joe could say something stupid which could put us on the brink of disaster, and the Democrats will applaud.  They will surround the wagons and protect old Joe.

Joe Biden and Michael Steele have the same problem.  It is not loose lips.  It is an election in November.  All indications are the Republicans will have victories across the board.  There is that much disenchantment in the hinterlands.  Gaffes, or not, at the end of the day results count.  If the indicators prove true, Michael Steele will still be standing.  Standing tall.  Joe Biden will be diminished- but he will still spout his lunatic ravings.

Joe Biden and team Obama will be reduced in stature.  They will no longer control the message or the conversation.  In the end it is who controls the message and conversation that counts.  The gaffes of Joe Biden will come back to bite him on the rear end.
